Choose your province to find a family law courthouse near you. You will need to file your divorce within the court. Contact information is provided for each court house so that you can call to ask any questions you may have.
Is there free divorce information at a local courthouse?
Yes, many of the family law courthouses will have information to help you file for your divorce. Informational packages and CDs are usually available for free and most of them include the paperwork you will need and information on how to prepare it.
Will the courthouse prepare my paperwork for me?
No. It is important to understand that the courts will not prepare the paperwork for you. Filing for a divorce in Canada isn’t always as straight forward as you might hope and while sometimes if it is an uncontested divorce and you can agree on all terms you may be able to do much of the work yourself. However, if you have any questions and to have everything prepared for the court we encourage you to connect with a divorce lawyer near you. While you might not need them to do the entire thing, it is beneficial to have a lawyer on your side when preparing to file for divorce.
Does it matter which courthouse I go to?
As long as you file within the province you reside, it doesn’t matter what courthouse you choose. Pick the one that is most convenient to you.
